Right-leaning reactions to the partial disclosure of files related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain supporters of the former Trump administration pointing out the noticeable presence of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while different voices expressed frustration over how heavy redactions cast Donald Trump and GOP members in a negative light.
Justice Department Defends Redactions with Fervent Hyperbole
Justice Department representatives defended the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “At no point in U.S. history has a President or the Justice Department been so open with the public about such a delicate legal issue,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed letter describing the censorship procedure.
Concerns Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's identity and image are visible in some of the documents, the widespread redactions prompt serious questions about the information may be concealed beneath them. Some Republicans immediately called for increased openness.
“The public are furious and walking away,” posted Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a online statement, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the redactions violate the law, and suggested that a subsequent Congress may move to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, this file dump grossly fails to adhere to both the intent and the letter of the law,” he continued.
A Faction of Conservative Figures Swing Behind the Disclosure
However, some conservative commentators and Trump loyalists came out strongly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The release—originating from a DOJ led by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of pages that are completely censored, and many of the men depicted in pictures have their faces blacked out.
But some are not, featuring prominent individuals like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, in particular, enabled certain rightwing figures to go on the attack.
“This is pretty rich how the political left wrongly claimed Donald Trump of being a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil Epstein files that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” wrote conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“New documents show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 explanation Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Clinton Campaign Releases Response
Bill Clinton has repeatedly stated he was aware of no criminal actions by Epstein and has not been accused to have engaged in any misconduct. “The White House hasn’t been hiding those documents for an extended period only to dump them at the last minute on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“This is about protecting officials from what comes next, or from information they will try and conceal forever. So they can publicize as many grainy decades-old photos as they want, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the response added.
Broader Rightwing Commentary Seems Subdued
Nonetheless, overall comment on the right was relatively muted after the disclosure, particularly when compared with the loud calls for action that preceded the congressional vote to enact a law requiring the documents' release.
Loomer, who not long ago accepted press credentials at the Pentagon, had been one of the most vocal advocates for a full disclosure. In February, she criticized the Justice Department broadly and Bondi specifically after a group of conservative personalities were provided hard-copy binders of files that included no new data.
